Cricket News: Dale Steyn set to join English county Hampshire

The Proteas ace will join the county in June as he looks to return to full fitness after a series of injuries.

Veteran Proteas fast bowler, Dale Steyn will join English county side, Hampshire for the 2018 domestic season.

The 34-year old has been on the sidelines for three months after suffering a heel injury during the opening Test of the home series against India at Newlands in January.

He will join up with the county in June, a month before South Africa is set to tour Sri Lanka for two Test matches, five One Day Internationals and one T20 international.

Steyn will also fill in for Proteas teammate, Hashim Amla, who joins the county for the first three months of the season.

Hampshire Director of Cricket, Giles White, says he hopes the stint at the county will help him get back to his best.

“Dale is one of the best bowlers in the world and is extremely motivated to get going after a frustrating period on the side-lines,” White said.

“It seems a great fit for both parties – we hope that we can help him get back to his best and we look forward to welcoming him to Hampshire.”

Steyn is South Africa’s second leading wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 419 wickets – two behind Shaun Pollock.

He made his Test debut against England in Port Elizabeth in 2004, and enjoyed a long injury-free period, until his 30s, where he has spent a large amount of time in the sidelines nursing niggles.

In 2015, he suffered a groin injury during the first Test of South Africa’s tour to India, which had him miss out on the rest of the series, before breaking down once again – this time with a shoulder injury against England in December that year.

He recovered in time to play against New Zealand in August 2016, but on tour in Australia, he suffered a shoulder injury, which put him out of action for 16 months, before returning for the New Year’s Test against India, where he lasted just a single innings before damaging the tissue in his heel.
